Care and Cleaning Your Hunter Douglas Blinds

So your new window coverings are installed and they are gorgeous. The Blind Guys did a wonderful job from start to finish. Now it is your turn to take care of your new product. Most horizontal and vertical blinds are easy to care for. Fabric, genuine hardwood and some other material require special care to keep the material looking like new.

Dust and Stain Prevention

Many Hunter Douglas blinds are specially treated to repel dust and dirt. Your new horizontal and vertical blinds have been treated with “Dust Shield” and anti-static paint additive that repels dust and dirt. This makes cleaning blinds even easier. Please check your paperwork for detailed care instructions for your specific product.

Weekly Maintenance and Blind Cleaning

On a weekly basis, lightly dust your blinds with a feather wand or use your hairdryer on a low heat setting and gently blow any accumulated dust off your blinds. If your blinds are particularly dusty, it is important to dust your blinds prior to cleaning your floor or other furnishings.

Monthly Maintenance

On a monthly basis, we recommend gently vacuuming your product with a brush attachment. Your brush should be firm but gentle as you do not want to take the chance of scratching some finishes. Avoid using a brush on some fabric and genuine hardwood blinds that require the greater care. If you are unsure if your product can handle a soft brush, check the Hunter Douglas care and cleaning guide or your product specification sheet.

Spot Cleaning

You can spot clean your shades with a soft cloth or sponge and lukewarm water. You may add a mild detergent if needed. Be gentle as rubbing can damage fabrics. Overzealous cleaning can also result in some areas being cleaner than others. Not all products are safe for spot cleaning so check your specific product brochure. Water damage on Hardwood blinds can become a problem. Some aluminum or vinyl blinds can be immersed in the bathtub. Be careful when cleaning your windows as window cleaner spray can damage some wood or fabric material.

Professional Cleaning

If you feel that your new window treatment needs more cleaning than you can do, Hunter Douglas recommends two professional cleaning methods; Injection/extraction cleaning which can be done in your own home and Ultrasonic cleaning. Your product brochure will provide detailed instructions on what method is recommended for your product.
